Experiment
Experiment: Making and Testing a Working Model of a Catapult
To make a working model of a catapult using ice cream sticks and a spoon, and to understand how stored elastic potential energy is converted into kinetic energy to launch an object.
Materials Required
8–10 ice cream sticks
3–4 rubber bands
1 ice cream spoon/plastic spoon
Small objects to launch: cotton ball, marshmallow, eraser, or a rolled paper ball
Principle Involved
A catapult works on elastic potential energy. When you press down the spoon, the rubber bands stretch and store energy. When released, this energy converts into kinetic energy, launching the object.
Procedure
Step 1: Make the base and lever
Stack 5–6 ice cream sticks on top of each other and hold them together at both ends with rubber bands. This is the base.
Take 2 ice cream sticks and tie them together at one end with a rubber band. This will act as the lever.
Step 2: Assemble the catapult
Place the lever across the base as shown in the diagram, so the tied end rests on the base and the free end sticks out.
Secure the crossing point with a rubber band to allow movement.
Step 3: Attach the spoon
Using a rubber band, attach the ice cream spoon to the free end of the lever.
Your catapult is now ready.
Testing the Catapult
Place a small object like a cotton ball in the spoon.
Hold the base down with one hand.
Press the spoon down with your other hand and release it suddenly.
Observe how far the object flies.
Repeat 3–4 times and measure the distance each time.
Observations
When the spoon is pressed down, the rubber bands stretch.
On release, the lever springs back and launches the object forward.
The distance varies with the force applied and the weight of the object.
Conclusion
The catapult works by converting elastic potential energy stored in the stretched rubber bands into kinetic energy, which launches the object. This demonstrates a simple application of energy transformation and mechanical advantage.
